The Penn State Alumni AssociationWhat’s been happening: I was raised in Jasper County, Indiana and graduated from high school in 1940 in Lowell, Indiana. In January 1943, I joined the Army and married Lola M. Torbet in April 1943. I entered Penn State under the ASTP Program in June to study engineering. In 1944 the Army transferred me to the 380th combat engineers. I was with this unit until March 1946 serving in the South Pacific and Japan. I then joined the Army Reserve Program and retired as a Lt. Colonel with 35 years of service. Prior to retirement, I graduated from the Army Command & Staff College. In 1946, I returned to Penn State and received a degree in Electrical Engineering. I was employed by Penn State as an engineer for 36 years and retired in 1984. I designed scoreboards for indoor sports and football and operated them for more than 50 years for gymnastics. My wife and I maintained a residence in State College for 63 years until her death in 2006. We raised three children (Alan, Sharon, and William-all PSU graduates). Alan is an RN and lives in McKees Rock. Sharon is a retired Special Education Teacher who lives in State College. William, the only one married, lives in Sugar Land, Texas with his wife Mary Alice and their three children (David, Leanne, and Austin). David just finished his first year in college. Leanne is a freshman in high school and very involved in cheerleading. |
